Last Light of the Day: West Wittering to the Isle of Wight
I am thrilled with how this painting captures the last light of the day at West Wittering looking towards the Isle of Wight. To really capture light is very tricky, but I wanted to convey not just the visual spectacle but the feeling of that magical moment when the sun touches the horizon. This time of year, from the end of February to April, offers spectacular sunsets with fresh new colours emerging in the sky.
The explosion of oranges and pinks against the deep blues creates a dramatic backdrop, while the textured brushwork in the foreground helps convey the movement of the tide against the shore. I've used layers of paint to build up the atmosphere, allowing the golden sun to create that distinctive reflection path across the water that draws your eye into the scene.
I'm particularly pleased with how the distant blue silhouette of the Isle of Wight anchors the composition, giving a sense of place and depth to this coastal vista. There's something totally stunning and captivating about this transition from day to night that I hope brings a real connection to this beautiful location.
