As an artist with over 25 years of experience, I believe that the Chichester Open Studios art trail offers an invaluable opportunity for children and teenagers to discover the world of art. Unfortunately, art is often taught in schools in a very prescriptive way that limits creativity and discourages exploration. That's why I think art trails are so important - they show young people that art is all about possibilities.
At Studio 80 (on the Peninsular trail) I am showcasing my works in oils and acrylics that depict the stunning coastlines of West Sussex and the Scottish Highlands. My inspiration for promoting the arts in education comes from the late Sir Ken Robinson, who devoted his life to changing the way we approach creative learning.
The educational aspect of the trail is particularly important because it allows young people to see what they can achieve when they are given the freedom to be creative. I believe that creative making is an essential part of creative thinking, which is linked to every subject and should be encouraged in schools.
Being part of the Chichester Open Studios has been an amazing experience for me. Not only do I enjoy sharing my work with visitors, but it also helps to break up the isolation that comes with being an artist. It's wonderful to see people's interest and enthusiasm for art and to show them how we work and what materials we use.
